Backup iOS 12 with iTunes in High Sierra Not Working

I just updated an iPhone 6s to iOS 12.

When I go to back it up with iTunes 12.8.0.150, on a Mac running High Sierra (10.13.6), I don't see the iPhone in iTunes.

It looks like Apple has made it so that I am forced to upgrade to Mojave, if I want to back up an iOS 12 device.

I use my Macs in a production environment so I am not really ready to update to a brand new OS.

Does anyone know a way to back up an iOS 12 iPhone using High Sierra?

Are others having this issue?

Figured this out for me. Same version of OS (10.13.6) and iTunes (12.8.0.150) and an iPhone X (iOS 12.1).

  1. Disconnect your iPhone from the computer.
  2. Redownload iTunes here: Download iTunes 12.8 for Mac
  3. Once it's done downloading, install.
  4. Once it's installed, plug in your iPhone and there should be a prompt for a software update. Update it.
  5. Once it's done, open iTunes and the iPhone should show (it did for me, at least).

Hopefully this works!

OK -- I finally got it to work . . . but NOT by using any hints on this forum . . . To recap => I am running OS 10.13.6 High Sierra and iTunes 12.8.0.150, but my iPod running iOS 12.1 is not recognized by iTunes and cannot be synced.

Here's how I got it to work => I first connected an iPad running iOS 11.4.1 and was able to sync and backup that device with iTunes just fine. Then I connected my iPod running iOS 12.1 and finally got the message that additional software needed to be installed in order for iTunes to recognize the device. I received this additional software update ONLY after successfully syncing with an Apple mobile device running iOS 11.4.

Perhaps this will help someone else.

In Finder use the menu item Go > Go to Folder..., copy the following text and paste it in, removing the unwanted space added by the forum software in the word Resources and press enter:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/Current/Resour ces

Unlock your device and connect it to USB. Double click on MobileDeviceUpdater in the folder that has opened. It should notify you of a software update. Install it and iTunes should recognize your device.

Rats -- I tried this => same version of OS (10.13.6) and iTunes (12.8.0.150) and iPod Touch 5 (iOS 12.1) and it does not work. No promo for software upgrade, and iTunes does not recognize the iPod.

Unfortunately, my iMac is too old to upgrade for Mojave (11.14) so I am stuck not being able to sync my iPod and my music collection until Apple updates iTunes to 12.9 for High Sierra.

NOPE -- I have tried multiple variations (re-installing iTunes 12.8 at least a dozen times) of these procedures that everyone assures me "should" work . . . but nothing works. I get no message that a further software update is required, and iTunes (12.8.0.150) running on OS (10.13.6) still does not recognize my iPod touch 5 (iOS 12.1).

Hopefully Apple will introduce an upgrade to iTunes 12.9 for High Sierra soon.

I know that Windows has 12.9.1 already. That is why I'm frustrated. Also iTunes 12.6.5.3 for OS 10.9-10.12 also added support for iOS 12 back in September. And, iTunes 12.9 for OS 10.14 Mojave has iOS 12 support. The only Apple operating system that doesn't have a version of iTunes to support iOS 12 is OS 10.13 High Sierra. And I shouldn't have restart a router and reboot a computer in safe mode just to get an Apple mobile device to talk to an Apple computer.

Let me preface this by saying that Gregory this reply is in no way for you, it's towards the situation at large.

I have yet to have any of the suggestions work. I do not have any other iOS devices therefore using an iPad, although a great suggestion, is not an option for me. This is so frustrating. The only device is my 10 year old daughter's iPod Touch. This device has become the bane of my existence. There is always something that Apple screws up that causes yet something else to be bricked on this thing. Honestly enough, there would be no way I'd just go pull the string willy nilly update to Mojave because Apple developers decided to test their updates in production yet again! I hope that someone at Apple is working on this. I get so tired of having to wait for them to get off their duffs to fix their own products. Honestly enough, what is this perfect storm of, iPod Touch, High Sierra, iTunes 12.8 and no sync or device recognition? C'mon, this is just sloppy code. I don't like that I feel this way, but this crap would not be happening if Steve Jobs were still alive.
