How do I stop Numbers configuring a cell automatically?

I've entered a list of data to the Numbers spreadsheet on my Mac. My problem is that the program has automatically converted the text in a cell, "18. Lunch expenses" into a numbering "18." (which I cannot delete) followed by text (which I can alter).

How do I turn the "18." into regular text so that I can delete or keep everything in the cell however I wish?

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

I would open the text formatter and see if Number decided you were making a numbered list.:

double click the text in the cell, then open the text formatter and "None" from the "Bullets & Lists" pop up
