why does apple care plus start before you have the product

I find it odd that when you buy a product like the iPhone 10 Max or iWatch 4 online it asks you if you would like to opt in and purchase Apple Care +. (which I do) yet the coverage starts even before Apple ships the product. So that means the expiration is less than 2 years from when they even ship it.

When I call the explanation seems to be it was on the same order and started when you ordered. While I understand the words its rather odd that they ask you opt in and do not tell you, you are better off waiting.

AppleCare+ dates start with the date of purchase, even if you wait 2 months then add AppleCare+. In other words, it will run until the 2 year anniversary after purchase. However, this peer-peer support community is populated only by other users, Apple is not here and doesn't read messages here so if there is a major discrepancy between your AppleCare+ start data and the date the product shipped you will need to take that up direct with Apple as appropriate to wherever you live around the world. Support document About your support coverage and service options - Apple Support should lead you to the correct local points of contact.

There is no problem with you asking questions here, if it is out of our scope we can simply point you at the correct place.

I think we are in agreement on the basic facts. Applecare would normally start on purchase date for a walk out of store sale, and in your case it looks like they have posted this as a shipped delivery with a standard 2 day allowance for getting the device delivered. That is of course not valid for pre-order when it is finally delivered, and I suspect they have a system to update this based on actual shipping dates when the box goes out of the door.

I suggest a two stage plan,

Check again when your order has actually been delivered, the dates may have been corrected automatically.

If it is still wrong, contact Apple using the links I posted above to find the correct phone number for where you live (It should find your country automatically and give you the correct point of contact).

Thank you and I appreciate this is not the place to post this although was curious if others had this problem with any resolution. My case is a bit different than the example you gave. For example I ordered an iWatch4 with Apple Care + on Sept 14. It has just shipped and should reach me next week (Oct 3). Yet the Apple Care + yet the coverage end date is Sept 16, 2020.

Thank you again. This happened on 4 separate devices/orders or which 3 have now been received but none of them have had the Apple Care Plus date corrected. I did already call Apple and there answer was Apple Care Plus starts on the day its ordered I can understand that normally but not when preordering a device that has a future delivery date for which they solicit opting in. I suspect its some glitch in their system. I will try again to call Apple once this last device is received.
