I want to install dropbox, is Mac 10.6.8 too old

I need to install dropbox asap on my Mac. I therefore need to update the OS if possible. Therefore, first I must back up everything to the iCloud. Is this possible on an old Mac, 10.6.8 OSX??

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

The Dropbox support site doesn't specify hardware, only OS version.

They dropped support for you OS version (10.6) last January but your computer (2010 iMac 21.5-inch) will run much newer OS versions. If you update the OS to Maverick or higher, you should be able to use it. I use DropBox all the time on my 2010 iMac 27 running 10.12.

If you need to back up before an install, you really need an external drive set up to do Time Machine backups.

We need to know the specs n your Mac. Go to Apple menu > About this Mac and give us the information there. Please do not post the serial number.

Also iCloud will not backup all your files. It's not meant as a backup, but rather a syncing feature to be sure those files are kept up to date across all you devices. You need either a TIme Machine backup or a clone.

According to Dropbox the Mac system requirements are:

Mac:Mac: OS X Mavericks (10.9) up to macOS Mojave (10.14)

And according to Apple you can install up to MacOS versions 10.13.5 (High Sierra) on your iMac (though I suspect there will be a slight performance hit).

I would suggest trying to get El Capitan (10.11) installed as a happy medium for both Dropbox and iMac performance.

Thank you for response. I don't have a hard disc to backup to, so thought the iCloud would do it. I'm not an IT person. A graphic document has been sent to me to edit via dropbox, which started this sequence. Here's the info on 'about this Mac':

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac11,2

Processor Name: Intel Core i3

Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz

Number Of Processors: 1

Total Number Of Cores: 2

L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 4 MB

Memory: 4 GB

Processor Interconnect Speed: 5.86 GT/s

Many thanks.
