Mojave installation getting stuck on late 2014 iMac...even in safe mode

Hi Friends,

Wanted to consult the team mind for ideas: my late 2014 27" Retina iMac running High Sierra with 3TB hard drive (2TB free) and 32GB RAM is getting stuck and freezing at the initial steps for installing Mojave. Here's the interesting part: it is happening even in safe mode, even after clearing the PRAM, and even after letting Disk First Aid (and Onyx) do their things. The installation went without a hitch on my late 2017 MBP, which carriers most of the same software and extensions.

The attached image is where it goes into endless spinning rainbow beach ball mode and requires a hard reset. Any ideas for next steps?

Hi Jonathan Terry1,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. From your post, it looks like you may be encountering an issue installing macOS Mojave.

You mentioned it seems to stop responding and shows you a spinning beach ball. About how long have you let it run before restarting? Sometimes, it's a matter of letting it run through the process.

You've also done some excellent troubleshooting so far. Have you tried to delete the macOS Mojave installer from your Applications folder and then re-download it from the App Store? This may help.

If it does not, you might also try making a bootable USB installer to complete the software upgrade. Here's How to create a bootable installer for macOS .

I hope these steps help with your install issue.

Have a great day.

Thanks so much for the informative, kind, and helpful response, Joseph_S.! Fortunately, the bootable installer on a USB flash drive did the trick. I let it run overnight, and eventually things got sorted out, and I was looking at a patch of desert on the desktop this morning 🙂.
