Iphone Xs won't charge without being tapped to wake up.

My new Iphone Xs is displaying problems when put up on charging using the accessories provided in Box. It does not start charging if is in sleep mode. I tried tapping to wake up with the charging cable plugged in but it does not respond. When I tried again with the phone awake and then plugging the charging cable, it started charging normally. Please assist to fix this.
