Upgrading Snow Leopard to El Capitan

Followed instructions from Apple to download from App Store. Getting error message from App Store "can't change payment info" and something about needing to upgrade os before downloading. So how do I get around this? FYI I've updated Snow Leopard before starting.

thank you. Using my phone to log in to my account was all that was needed apparently. The payment info was already there and correct.

When I was prompted to put in my password in the App Store (when trying to download El Capitan again), I used my phone to get a verification code (settings->Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes & App Store-> password & security -> verification code. I typed in the 6 digit code directly after my password with no spaces and then enter. It worked! (I found this out from another thread on this forum)

El Capitan is up and running! Thanks for the help!
