Hi, This has happened to my 4k iMac 2015 right after I upgraded to Mojave. Initially I reformatted my disk and re-installed the OS but it happened a second time to me. The second time I followed instructions on Macworld on how to reset my password via the recovery mode, going into the console and entering 'resetpassword' pressing return. This worked and allowed me to login. However today, my iMac has again forgotten my new password and even after trying to reset the password again this failed.

Just give the instructions here on Macworld a go to try and reset your password then backup everything on your disk while you still have access. Absolutely appalled that Apple allowed this software bug to get through QA.

Hi Brisrob111,

Did you enable FileVault as part of the upgrade?

1. Get a printout of the Apple US keyboard layout;

2. Restart your MacBook Pro and set the keyboard layout to US;

3. Enter your password according to the QWERTY layout you have printed from step #1.

Currently, there is not solution from Apple to resolve this issue. The next best thing is to DISABLE FileVault once you are logged in.

The worst reply, from Apple Support I received, was "if I were a spy or working for an embassy requiring such high encryption for my MBP 2017".

Step 1: First of all check the keyboard input.at the right corner the display.In my case it changed to US keyboard standard instead of German.that means every attemp to log in using my regular password failed because the character swapped.If all that seems okey procced to step 2

Step2: shut down yur mac the reboot to recovery mode by pressing CMD+R. Window with list of options will be displayed,don't worry about them instead click 'utilities' from the menubar.Select 'Terminal' from the drop down list.In the console enter then 'resetpassword' and hit ENTER. That will pop up another wimder where you'll be able to put int your new loging credentials.

Step:3 Restart your mac and use yoir new credential to log in.

Keyboard default issues with login. I have had problems logging in because I have a Spanish keyboard and had installed both the Spanish and US keyboard layouts. As soon as I installed the US keyboard as an option, it became the default one. I haven´t found any way to make the Spanish one the default. I did make the keyboard icon appear in the top right so at least I would know which keyboard it was set at, but there are times, such as at login, that it would not be there. I think sometimes my login attempts failed because of the keyboard layout. When I reset the login password my Mail passwords were deleted, so I had to re-enter them, which created other problems! In the end I resigned to simplifying the process to avoid login issues. I at first simplified my password so that it was the same keys if I used the US or Spanish keyboards. When I still had problems logging in, deleted the US keyboard option, so now I only have one. Let´s see if that works.
