Stuttering clips after import to iMovie

I have a late 2009 27in iMac and 13in mid 2011 MBA both with the latest versions of High Sierra and iMovie. They also have plenty of disk storage space.

Both are exhibiting exactly the same symptoms.

As an example, I have a piece of video on my iPhone SE containing a landscape scene which scans perfectly on playback. After importing the clip (I'm choosing the iPhone to keep my problem within the Apple environment but it also happens with my camcorder), the playback of the event on the preview screen shows consistent stuttering as the scene pans slowly across the selected shot.

If I select the clip and insert it into a project and play this back, it continues to stutter as it does if I create a movie from it.

I have read many discussions on this topic across many years but have been unable to find more recent entries with the latest range of software.

Can anyone please suggest a solution as it is currently pointless creating movies where the output contains many scanning scenes as it is simply so frustrating - and looks very amateurish.

Cheers

Roy

Hi,

Putting lower frame rate clips into a higher frame rate project might be a cause of stuttering. Also, I believe that iPhones record in a variable rather than constant frame rate, so maybe that's the issue. In that case you can use the free download, Handbrake, to convert to a constant frame rate.

Using very hi-def clips in an underpowered computer might be another cause. You can can get some stuttering with the slower i5 processer, although the shared out project should be O.K.

iMovie likes clips in Mp4/AAC format, so if yours are different you might try converting them, again using Handbrake.

Audio can sometimes cause stuttering. The formats aiff and AAC are best.

Here are some more things that you can try:

Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. See if you still get the stuttering.

Try creating new projects with the subject clips and other clips to see if the problem replicates. Sometimes problems are confined to one project and do not appear in others.

Open iMovie in a new user account, such as the Guest account on your Mac, and see if the problem replicates.

All else failing, try redownloading iMovie. Drag your current iMovie app from the Applications folder to the trash, but don't empty the trash. Don't touch the iMovie Library. Then go to the online app store and redownload iMovie. If the download is successful you can empty the trash. If not, you can drag iMovie from the trash and replace it in the Applications folder.

Thanks for the quick response and I will try experimenting with Handbrake (pity that it's not a recognised software utility downloadable from the Apps Store).

Just to complete the picture, I have been using iMovie since purchasing the iMac (2011) and have only fairly recently experiencing these bad effects (even if I've only just got around to generating a discussion on this forum). This has involved the creation of dozens of movies - all with panning shots and most at Full HD quality - and they have worked perfectly independent of input device (often a mix of iPhone, Panasonic camcorder and Nikon camera).

I appreciate your information regarding frame rates but would be extremely disappointed if Apple devices using Apple software were not absolutely compatible with each other - surely the main reason for getting on the Apple bandwagon.

Rich, thanks for your continued help.

I have downloaded Handbrake and created an mp4 and an MKV file (the options available) with 'constant frame rate' selected. Whether it's wishful thinking but both formats may be a bit better but stuttering is definitely still evident.

I think I may take this clip into an Apple store and see how it looks on one of the latest generations of iMac and MBA.

Meanwhile, I remain disappointed that what once worked faultlessly not so long ago has been tampered with by Apple with the result of an unworkable end product.
