Didn't unpair my apple watch with my old iphone before i traded it in. Help?

I got a new iPhone and traded in my old one. I didn't unpair my old phone from my apple watch before trading it in. Now I am unable to pair it to my new iPhone xs max. (I didn't know I had to.) I have to wipe it clean and then I lose all of my data. However I did do a full back-up of my old iPhone running iOS 12. Does anyone know how I can get my activity data back?

iPhone XS Max, iOS 12, null

Did you install this backup onto your new iPhone? If so, then erasing your watch and then pairing it with your new iPhone should allow you to recover your watch's data, since it is part of the iPhone's backup.

You are correct that you need to erase the watch before pairing again. If you had unpaired that would have the same effect as erasing by other methods. Unfortunately your watch is now isolated and there is no way to extract any new data from it. Any Activity data which had already been passed back to your iPhone will be preserved, providing your backup was iCloud , or iTunes with encryption.
