Phone App Freezes on iOS 12 iPhone SE

A few days ago I updated to iOS 12. I'm now on 12.0 (16A366).


Today my iPhone app consistently locks up. I can launch the app, but then I can neither select nor scroll. I'm stuck on my "Recents" screen.

Restarting the app has no effect.

Restarting the phone may have brought very temporary relief. But it didn't last.


Possibly relevant: I have NoMoRobo installed, and earlier today I received a spam call and shared it with NoMoRobo as I usually do.


Anyone else having problems with the Phone app, esp. the Recents screen? Or with NoMoRobo?

Hi,


Uninstall the NoMoRobo app to test. It may not be iOS 12 compatible. (It’s up to third party app developers to update their apps for Apple’s iOS software).


If that’s not the issue you can re download it from the App Store.

Solution found.


All:


Apple support was not able to help with fixing this problem. However, while chatting with a tech by the handle “Mikey” last night I found a solution.


Updating over WiFi only changes the sections of the OS code on your phone that has been changed In the new version.


Updating over a wire with iTunes REPLACES the OS entirely.


So if your phone is jacked up, here is what you do:


1) Update iTunes on your desktop/laptop. You need the latest version.

2) Connect your iPhone to your desktop/laptop.

3) Backup your phone to your laptop.

4) Leaving the wire connected, hard reboot the phone:

- iPhone SE, hold down “home” and “power” for 45 seconds or longer.

- Other models do the vol up, vol down, power, hold for 45 seconds.

5) Phone will reboot. KEEP HOLDING!

6) iTunes will say “there is a problem with the iPhone...”

7) Click “update”

8) iTunes will download an update and will install when download complete... mine was about 2.8 Mb.

9) Your desktop/laptop will decompress the file and then start pushing it to the phone.

- “iTunes is preparing to update the software on the phone”

10) Wait a bit

11) “iTunes is updating the software on the phone”

12) you will see the “Apple“ screen in your phone with a progress bar showing how much the installation has progressed.

13) “Verifying the updated iPhone”

14) Phone reboots

15) When your phone wakes up, you will have to unlock your phone for the push to continue.

16) Syncing iPhone

Now your phone should work.

I have a 5SE with the same issue ever since updating to 12.0.0. The 12.0.1 update didn't seem to fix anything. This appears to be related to the iOS 12 update. There's another thread on here describing the issue across all phone models: Phone app freezes/gets stuck since iOS 12


I've never had an issue like this before with other phones. I happened to be looking at upgrading when these freezes started occurring and this is really making me consider switching from Apple for my next phone. I'm not sure if I am ready to give up the ability to place phone calls from my phone just yet.

Just want to say that I am having this issue as well on an iPhone X running iOS 12.


I chatted with Apple, and they said that Apple has received additional reports of this issue, but they do not have a fix.


My workaround for now is to reboot my iPhone every now and then. This allows the phone app to temporarily work until it locks up again (or, in my current case, I just get a frozen white screen).

Having exact same issue on iPhone SE. Don't have a nomorerobo app


My phone eventually stopped responding to restarts as well. Has to do a reinstall with itunes


Incredibly frustrating to get something so basic so incredibly wrong. The phone app is one of the most basic functions of the phone


I'm at Apple now. No solutions yet

I doubt it. My SE is only a few months old. I think this is an iOS 12 problem, not a hardware problem. A post above (who has an Apple X) says he has talked to Apple; they know about this but do not have a fix.


By the way I installed update 12.0.1 and now my phone app is working. Fixing the phone is not listed as included in this update though ... I expect it will freeze again.

The most frequent issue I've been having since updating to iOs 12 and 12.0.1 is that my Phone app freezes up, and I cannot select any menu items (favorites, key pad, contact list, etc).

I either have to dial from the Contacts app or restart the phone. It usually corrects itself after I restart my phone, but sometimes the problem still exists. Hope I don't need to dial from my keypad . . .


I don't have NoMoRobo installed.

I chatted with Apple Support.


Any reboot / reinstall / reset of the phone is just a temporary fix. Apple is trying to fix the issue. Workarounds:

- Use the phone from messages or contacts. The failure is isolated to the phone app itself.

- Reboot, which temporarily fixes the issue until the resource leak or memory leak or whatever it is again causes the phone app to freeze on launch.


The issue appears to happen on all phone models. The issue has been reported many hundreds of times, I'm surprised the press hasn't had fun with it yet (first they remove the headphone jack, then they remove the ability of the phone to make phone calls: courage!)


Killing the phone app and relaunching it does not fix the issue. Resetting the phone is also only a temporary fix, presumably because it reboots.


Apple tech support does not monitor "discussions.apple.com" or have any ability to make edits here. Pretty sad since this is the top search result in Google for this issue and it's on Apple's own Web site.

So had this in the iPhoneX when I upgraded to IOS 12. Moved to my iPhone XS and still had it patched to 12.1 still had the same issue. So tried the network reset, that works briefly as did a hard reset but usually starts locking up after about 5 minutes. So tried the computer tethered reload and like the reboot looked like it worked but after about 5 mins started locking back up again. Guess I will wait for the fix from apple.

Frustrated.
