LG Ultrawide (34UM61-P) resolution problem on late 2012 Mac Mini

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini (2.3GHz quad-core Intel i7; 1TB Fusion Drive; 16GB RAM; Intel HD Graphics 4000) which has one Thunderbolt port and one HDMI port. I am running Sierra (10.12.6).

I recently purchased an LG Ultrawide (34UM61-P) and can not get it to register the 2560 x 1080 resolution it requires.

After hours of research and several chats with Apple Support, I now have it connected to the Thunderbolt via a Mini Display Port to 4K HDMI Adapter. Still no change in the resolution up from the 1920 x 1080.

More research, and I still don't know how to fix this.

1) Some reports stated that Sierra stopped supporting the resolutions needed for Ultrawides. Then someone said it was fixed with a Sierra update. Are the Ultrawides now supported again with High Sierra or Mojave?

2) Another suggestion was to use a Mini Display Port to Display Port Cable. Will this solve my problem? If so, what exactly do I need to look for since the previous Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter I had wasn't compatible with higher resolutions and I had to rush order the 4K adapter from Best Buy and pay extra for overnight shipping?

3) Nothing I plug into the Thunderbolt port appears when I go to System Report/Thunderbolt. "No device connected" is what it says when I have my 23" LG LED monitor connected or when I had the LG Ultrawide connected. But both of those monitors do appear under Graphics/Displays in the System Report.

Help please. Wasting 12 hours of my time trying to get an new monitor functioning kind of depletes wanting the Ultrawide monitor to increase my efficiency, you know what I mean?

Thank you in advance!

I'm sure the only issue in the LG monitor is the type of connection and the resolution the connection supports on a Mac

Here is a 34"Ultrawide LG monitor that does have a DP connection. I would almost guarantee it would support the max resolution of 2560X1080 with a mini DP to DP cable which you want.

As to what "Active" means, I could not tell you. I only know it works for me in a similar situation.

The HDMI problem is created by the way Windows and Mac handle HDMI.

I'm sure I suggested you try the Amazon handled mini Displayport to Active HDMI adapter. If so, did you try it?

Amazon is good about taking back items that don't work.

I have a HP Envy 34 UltraWide which I connected with a Displayport to mini Displayport cable and I got max 2560 X 1440 resolution.

On Late 2012Mac mini HDMI is limited to1920 X 1080 so you need something to override the limitation. On my regular UHD flatscreen I can get 3840 X 2160 resolution even though Apple says it is not supported, so might worth a try, at least Amazon will take it back.

There has to be a difference in the 2 cables. The name with Active inserted and the price. I have no experience with the smaller resolution monitor but unless it is absolutely imperative the adapter comes tomorrow you waited this long trying to get to work, although frustrating, a few more days shouldn't hurt.

Have you thought of exchanging the monitor with a similar one that has a DisplayPort connection?

I ordered a 4K Mini DP to HDMI adapter from Best Buy on Sunday because I choose to not order from Amazon. I made sure it listed higher resolutions than the 2560x1080 that I need for this LG Ultrawide monitor. But now that I wasted $$$ for overnight shipping, in the package it states that this adapter (j5create model jda 159-3a) supports 4K@30Hz, and the LG Ultrawide wants 2560x1080@60Hz.

The adapter you listed above on Amazon isn't the one that Mac tech support suggested to me on Sunday. They suggested this one: Amazon.com: Cable Matters 4K Mini DisplayPort to HDMI 4K Adapter (Mini DP to HDMI Adapter) in Black - Thunderbolt | Thun…

So is the only difference the one you suggested above is "active"?

I just updated to High Sierra this morning, and I'm still not getting the correct resolution on the LG Ultrawide.

I like LG monitors and have used them for years without any issues. LG states that this monitor works with Macs.

To me, the issue is either the connection or the Mac Mini. I haven't upgraded from the late 2012 because I refuse to buy a late 2014 when it's 2018. I've been looking to update for two years now, but will not waste money on something that is that outdated. *sigh*

What exactly does "active" mean?

You know, I wholeheartedly agree with you as far as doing business with certain companies. I would rather do without than compromise my values. Amazon and Walmart(don't snicker) I utilize probably for 95% of my online ordering. Their return policy, interest-free financing, and support I feel are second to none and will keep me as a customer. It's strictly a matter of opinion.

As I said in my previous post, many brands will advertise as compatible with Mac but they are not necessarily optimized for Mac meaning they will operate on a Mac but not at the full extent possible.

As a PS to your previous message Amazon does not charge for shipping on items over $25 I believe and return postage has always been paid by Amazon, unless you desire something faster than the free shipping time.
