When you updated iTunes, did you also update Quicktime?

Some OS X basic trouble shooting:

1. Repair disk permissions with Disk Utility

2. delete the com.apple.iTunes.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder

3. Create a new account (System Preferences -> Accounts) and see if iTunes will launch in that account. If it does, then we know that the iTunes is fine but the problem is something in your account. If it doesn't launch in the new account, then re-install iTunes.

So, I was having this problem too. This site was not much of a help and I could call Apple (since they charge for their tech support calls!). Finally, I got fed up with it and read that technical jargon that gets sent in the "report this error" message. That revealed that the problem, at least on my system, lay within a visualizer plugin I had installed.
I removed all my visualizer plugins, repaired permissions, and the program hasn't crashed since.
If that changes, I'll edit this. Until then, try this as a fix.
