If you are using Keynote v8.1 or later for the Mac, you also have the option of using LaTeX (or MathML) syntax in Keynote's built-in equation editor to introduce inline math syntax. If you were attempting to use MathType, you had to select the Keynote Preferences : General : Equations checkbox to use it. Deselect that, and close Keynote Preferences. Now, you can use the option+cmd+E key combination to launch the built-in Keynote Equation editor sheet.

There is more information on entering math in Apple's HT207569 article.

What math were you interested in entering?

The short of it is that the combination of Mojave and Keynote 8.2 doesn't work with MathType. There's nothing we can do about that except by way of permanent workaround (meaning that you have to do something once, and the fix is as permanent as Apple's future updates allow it to be). I'll spare all the why & wherefore, but do this to get it working...

  1. Download an earlier version of Keynote. I tried it with 6.2.2, but I imagine anything from 6.0 through 8.1 will work. Trouble with this step is finding some place to download it from. Apple doesn't make earlier versions available, and 3rd party sites are quite often shady, and most of the others merely link to the App Store. So you're stuck. Time Machine is an option, but not everyone (myself included) uses TM.
  2. You don't need to install this version of Keynote. If you do, or if the download doesn't give you any other option, that's OK. You can always get 8.2 from the App Store again once these steps are complete. All you need is Keynote.app. I recommend putting it anywhere other than Applications; I put it on the Desktop when I worked through these steps.
  3. Run the older version of Keynote and change the Preferences to insert equations from MathType. If the version of Keynote is 7.0 or earlier, this option won't be in Preferences.
  4. Insert a MathType equation (not by copy & paste; you have to go through Keynote's Insert menu). You'll get a pop-up telling you "Keynote wants access to control MathType". You must click OK.
  5. After you do that, MathType will open. Type anything inside MathType and close the window to insert the expression/equation into Keynote. When you do that, you'll get a similar dialog telling you that "MathType wants access to control Keynote". Grant the access by clicking OK.
  6. You can now close Keynote, and delete the old version. Keynote 8.2 will now work with MathType.

You'll need to make similar changes to let Pages 7.2 and Numbers 5.2 work with MathType.
