Can't attach photo to text message

I did the most recent iphone update (ios 12) to my phone (iphone 6) and since then I have not been able to attach pictures to my text messages. When I hit the camera button while on my text message screen, only the camera screen comes up, there is no access to my photo album. My husband did the update as well and his screen has access to his photo album on the top corner of the screen, mine does not have this at all. I've restarted my phone, (also have done a hard restart) and still nothing....suggestions?

iPhone 6, iOS 12

I can't either and I don't even have the photos icon anymore. When I first did the update I could only take a new photo, then I had the photo icon for a few days, then I did the latest update & the photos icon is gone again. There is no option to swip up or anything.
