Table of Contents

I'm placing a large amount of data into long-term storage on an external HD. What I'd like to place with it is a printed "Table of Contents" so I don't have to plug it in and search the HD for what might not even be there. Is there a way to do that automatically instead of starting a spreadsheet or word doc and filling in the titles manually?

Hello,

What do you mean by "printed"? With a printer?

If you don't need an actual printout, Spotlight should maintain an index for you. Open a Finder window on the disk and do a search. Then, after "Search:" near the top of the window, click on the name of the disk next to "This Mac". This will narrow your search to just that drive.

If you just want a directory listing, you could use "find ." from the command line while in the root directory of that disk. I'm sure there are plenty of 3rd party utilities to do this.
