Can't play songs sequentially in iTunes/iPhone 8 plus

I have several playlists set up in iTunes and I can't play songs sequentially. I have an iPhone 8 plus and upgraded to iOS12. I play the first song I want then push the red button with 3 white dots and click Play Next and it usually generates the rest of the play list in sequential order. For some reason an Apple Music prompt comes up. I had a subscription but canceled it and turned the option off on my iPhone and I can click Not Now on the Apple Music screen but my playlist doesn't create. I'd like to listen to songs sequentially again before I had Apple Music. Any help would be great.
