Hello mercury cougar,

I understand that you are unable to hear directions from Apple Maps. I'm happy to provide some help for this issue.

Check out the steps in the following article to use the Route Card to change where Navigation Voice will play:

Use Maps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Use the Route Card

With iOS 10, you can use the Route Card to find nearby places, like gas stations, food, and more.

To add a detour to a trip, follow these steps:

  1. Swipe up on the menu bar while you're navigating.
  2. Select an option, like Gas Stations. Maps will show you a list of nearby suggestions.
  3. Tap User uploaded file. Maps will add the detour to your original route.
  4. When you’re ready, tap the blue banner at the top of the screen to resume your route.

To get detailed turn-by-turn directions, swipe up on the menu while you're navigating and tap Details. You can also see your trip overview and adjust your Navigation Voice settings from the same menu bar.

Selecting the output will determine where Navigation Voice will play the turn-by-turn directions.1 If you’re using Maps connected to Bluetooth, like in your car, you can choose how to get these directions. Learn how to use Maps with Bluetooth.

This article also offers some good troubleshooting steps for CarPlay issues:

Set up CarPlay with your iPhone - Apple Support

Get help

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

You didn’t state whether you were trying to get the audio through the phone’s speakers or using something like car play or connection to your car’s speakers. You shouldn’t have to turn Bluetooth off, although that will then force the phone to not try playing the audio through another device. When you play something in music or otherwise I believe the sound will default to the last used option but you can manually select ”speaker” for the iphone’s speakers.
