You open a Word document in Pages, and the latter will translate it into Pages own internal .pages document format. The original Word document remains unchanged, uneditable, and unsaveable — while all changes occur within the new .pages document. Pages documents only autosave after you have formally saved them once from the File menu. Pages will refuse to open Word documents that it deems are too old.

Another translation occurs when you are ready to export that Pages document content to other formats offered on the Export menu, including Word formats. Care should be taken in the choice of the exported document name, as the potential exists, after an appropriate warning from the Finder, to overwrite the same Word document that was opened previously.

As Pages is no Word clone, the translation process from, or to Word documents is approximate, because both applications have unique features unsupported by the other. Any referenced font face in a Word document must actually be installed on the Mac, as Pages will otherwise produce a warning and attempt font substitution. Pages does not embed fonts in exported Word documents.
