Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! I understand your iPad will become unresponsive. Being able to use your iPad reliably is important for many reasons, so I can definitely understand wanting to clear this up.
If this behavior is isolated to a specific app, let's have you troubleshoot the app with the following guide: If an app unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open
If the unresponsiveness isn't isolated to a specific app, then I suggest to reinstall the iOS software of your iPad using a computer with iTunes. Reinstalling the software won't cause you to lose data with your iPad, however I suggest creating a backup with iTunes or iCloud first: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Although the name of the support article is different than the issue you're experiencing, the steps for reinstalling the software of your iPad can be found in the following guide: If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If reinstalling the software doesn't help to resolve the behavior, the next best step would be to restore the software of the iPad. Restoring the software will reinstall the iOS software and erase your device to factory settings in the process, so please make sure you've backed up your iPad before processing this step. Once in factory settings, it would be great to test the behavior to see if the iPad operates as expected. You could then restore your backup after you've tested the behavior. See how to both restore the iPad to factory settings, as well as how to restore your backup from the following guide: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings
If additional assistance is needed, it would be helpful to know the actions you take when you notice the unresponsiveness with the iPad, and if this behavior is isolated to a specific app.
Kind regards.
