Cannot Open Files . . . (used by Mac OSX and cannot be opened)

I have a bunch of photos in a folder on my desktop which i can't seem to access. When I open the folder and click on one of the jpgs to open it the following message comes up:

"this item "file name" is used by Mac OSX and cannot be opened"

Does anyone know how i can fix this?

thank you
