An error occurred while communicating with the scanner (-9923)

Hi, I'd be grateful if someone had a solution or some guidance to the above error message on Mojave with an Epson XP-830.

Here are the details:

I am running a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) with macOS Mojave Version 10.14 on an AirPort Time Capsule Wi-Fi that is bridged to a Verizon FIOS router. I have an Epson XP-830 for which I am getting the above error when I try to use the scanner through the Preview application, or the "Open Scanner..." button in the "Printers & Scanner" widget in the System Preferences. I am reasonably certain that I have used the scanner successfully since upgrading to Mojave.

So far I have:

  1. Recycled the power on the printer
  2. Unplugged the printer, waited 30 seconds, reconnected power and then powered it on
  3. Restarted the laptop
  4. Uninstalled from System Preferences and reinstalled the printer using the default Secure AirPrint driver
  5. Uninstalled from System Preferences and reinstalled the printer using the EPSON XP-830 Series driver
  6. Downloaded the latest Epson driver (dated 9/11/2018) from https://epson.com/Support/Printers/All-In-Ones/XP-Series/Epson-XP-830/s/SPT_C11C E78201 and installed the printer with that driver
  7. Ensured that both printer and laptop are on the same network

The printer cannot use the 5 GHz network, so I put the laptop on the same network as the printer, though it has normally been on the 5 GHz network.

  8. Reset the NVRAM (although I never got a second chime as the documentation indicates)
  9. Reset the SMC
  10. Restarted the AirPort Time Capsule
  11. Checked the Printer Advanced Settings:
    1. Disabled IPV6
    2. Set the DNS Domain Name Setting to "Auto". It is now connected to the same DNS Domain Name as the laptop

Any thoughts, hints, guidance, or downright first-hand experience would be most welcome! Thanks for your time.

Update:

When I tried to scan from the printer and send it to the laptop, the printer gave the following error, "Communication error. Check if a computer is connected." I thought it odd that it could detect the laptop, but not communicate with it.

Meanwhile, on the laptop, there is an "Event Manager" dialog box:

"Cannot communicate with the scanner.

Make sure the scanner is on, correctly setup and

connected with no errors in the scanner. If using an

SCSI connection, restart your computer"
