controlling paired HomePods

I've paired two HomePods in my house for stereo, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. One of the (the bedroom) will not accept commands from Siri about what I want both of them to play. Can it be changed so they both can accept commands?

Stereo paired HomePods are intended to be used in the same room where they can provide a proper stereo audio experience when you are a suitable distance from the pair, ideally somewhere near the third point of an equilateral triangle. In this mode only one speaker listens and responds to requests. Use Feedback - HomePod - Apple to suggest that it could work differently. You might be better not using stereo mode. It should be possible to request the same content be played to multiple unpaired speakers.
