iPhone Xs Max Heat Issue

Hi,

Does anyone has similar problem where their iPhone XS Max back feels very hot when doing some light tasks?

My iPhone gets hot near the back camera quite fast when doing some light tasks such as Video Calling, etc...

I am wondering if it is normal or a hardware/software issue where I should bring to Apple for diagnosing?

Regards,

iPhone XS Max, iOS 12

If you're concerned, feel free to take your phone in to be examined, but it's quite normal for the phone to get warn doing processor intensive tasks.

Video calling is actually one of the more extreme things a computing device has to do - mange incoming and outgoing high definition streams in real time.

In my case, I did a full reset. Installed my 3rd party apps one by one and used them for a minute or so to check any problems. I found at least 3 of them heating up my phone. It’s tedious, especially for people with many apps and don’t have the time to do so. But I’m positive the Animoji/Memoji heats up my phone after just a few seconds.

If the phone isn’t shutting down there likely isn’t an issue.

Past phones haven’t had as powerful a processor as new phones, and CPUs get hot when performing a lot of work.

Unless the phone heats to the point it shuts down, there is not necessarily anything wrong, but if you are concerned, take it to your local Apple Store or other authorized service agent to be examined as if you have an XR/XS/XS Max you are clearly still within your one year factory warranty.

Are you using them on cellular data or Wi-Fi? If it's not Wi-Fi, how strong is the signal? A 1 bar cellular connection uses 10 times as much energy as a 5 bar. Wi-Fi uses less energy than cellular, however it uses it continuously, not just when data transfer is in progress.

You can go to Settings/General/Background App Refresh and turn off those apps. That will prevent them from updating when you aren't using them. The downside is that you will have to wait for them to update when you open then, but it should reduce their energy usage.

Beyond that, hope that Facebook (who owns Whatsapp) does something about it. There are ways to manage energy usage (which is the only source of heat generation outside of charging) that app developers can do.

Microprocessors generate heat when working hard.

Unless your phone is shutting down, it's perfectly normal for it to become warm when used in a way that makes heavy use of the CPU.

WhatsApp is doing real time transmission of voice and/or video over the Internet in real time, one of the more demanding things a CPU can be asked to do.

Further, as a third party app, it is not fair to compare the app written for one operating system (iOS) with the same app written for another.

If for some reason the heat generated offends you, if you are still within your return window return it and purchase another brand of phone.

You’re absolutely right. The combination of the high processing activity, the glass back, and I can now confirm - some rogue apps that have poor processor management/usage is what’s causing it. I tested some a while back and some wanted to turn my phone into a toaster even when they were dismissed in the background. But the main/big apps work fine, even a video streaming app like YouTube.

I have reviewed all the info out there and will give this a week or so. However, it appears that after initially beginning the whole start up process when getting started on your new iphone - even though you don’t think you have apps open in the background, your photos, videos, etc... are all still downloading. Mine seemed to take about 3 hours total. While I had wifi on, I have over 13,000 photos and over 600 videos. AND the apps all have to fully download, as does the OS updates...

All this processing can create quite the heat, in addition to trying to charge your phone through this whole process.

I have a soft ice pack that I put my phone on once I realized how hot it was getting. I just purchased the Xr Max - funny thing is I had this same issue with my brand new 6s Plus about 3 years ago when I was out of country and my phone tried to upload the 2000 pics I had taken that day - I am not exaggerating on that number lol. I did the same then and had no further issues in the last 3 years with my iPhone 6. I simply chose to upgrade now for the better quality of pictures.

I do not recommend using anything that will create condensation - I had the soft ice pack under a double folded towel so all that was coming through was just a slight cool, enough to keep the phone from becoming too hot.

I hope this helps.

Define "excessive heat." If the phone gets hot to the point where it exceeds the safe operating temperature for the phone it will shut off. If it doesn't shut off it is not "excessive heat."

If you are using the camera the area near the camera will get quite hot if the camera is open for more than a few minutes. This is because the camera sensors (there are two of them) take a lot of energy. They do on every phone with a camera, BTW.

The phone will also get hot when using cellular data or voice if the cellular signal is weak (1 or 2 bars). That's because the phone increases its output power as much as 10 times to maintain a connection.

The phone will get hot when playing games with interactive graphics, because the display uses energy every time it changes state.

The phone will get hot when you have the brightness up high, because the backlight is using more energy.

And, of course, the heat from these is additive. 2 or more of them will create more heat than any one alone.
