Mojave Internet Connection Issue

Just updated from High Sierra to Mojave on my Mac Mini (Late 2012). To do that of course, I was connected to the internet via my normal wifi. However, as of after the update, it is still connected to the wifi but claims that there is no internet. This, of course, is confusing as other devices (my MacBook Air running High Sierra, my iPhone iOS12.0, and others' computers both apple and other in the home) are browsing without issue.

It does not show the wifi symbol with the exclamation mark ( ! ) in it either, as it would if the internet truly was not available.

I have never in the past had this issue occur when updating between MacOS. All settings appear to be identical to before the update. I am not running any programs that are not Apple-approved from the app store or that would have access to override my system settings.

I have attempted:

  • browsing in Safari/Chrome/Firefox
  • disconnecting/reconnecting wifi on my mac, as normal
  • removing the wifi from the auto-join list before disconnecting/reconnecting
  • 'forgetting' the wifi network, then disconnecting/reconnecting with the password requirement
  • turning on/off the wifi router
  • restarting my mac & repeating the same above attempts

Mac mini, macOS Mojave (10.14)

Is there any other avenue you would suggest I look into?

(... thinking ...)

In System Preferences->Network, select Wifi, click on Advanced...

We already looked at DNS, and it seems ok (and, furthermore, it is not connecting even if typing the numeric IP, in which case DNS is not involved).

Now let's look at Proxies. Usually all the opens are to be unchecked.

If you have a box checked, try unchecking and see how things work (or not).

No proxies checked off.

I looked through the other tabs, and they are all on the automatic / default setting.

A friend suggested I try opening in Safe Mode to see if there would be any difference. Nothing changed, so I deleted the Wi-Fi from the Network window list, made a Wi-fi connection and it worked (connected to Apple & Google)!

But... unfortunately when I restarted in the normal mode, it did not work anymore. I did the same thing as I did in Safe Mode and still no internet despite Wi-Fi connecting.

It all looks ok, so the problem is probably with DNS.

Click the Advanced... button, then click DNS. What do you see there?

It may be empty, or with a greyed address, which means it will use your router as the DNS server; or it may have a specific address. If it shows something that you don't recognize, make a note of it, just in case, and delete it. Try again. You may also try adding one of the google free DNS servers, like 8.8.8.8
