i am planning to buy an iMAC and wanted to handcarry it (without the box, repack it or put it in suitcase) on an international trip. I wanted to ask if anybody knows if the stand is detachable cause it makes the screen pretty bulky with it. let me know.
The stand can only be removed from the inside (except for the 24") through a warranty voiding, complicated process that involves removing most of the Mac's internal parts. The stand can be removed from the 24" Mac with a special card tool bought from Apple and a TORX wrench, but is not for the faint of heart. Some folks have had to pay Apple to resolve the mess they created when they were not successfull in following the directions. I use the iLugger on bus, train and airline excursions quite successfully. However, even a 17" iMac gets pretty heavy to lug around after awhile!
hey thanks for all these valuable information. i guess removing the stand is not an "easy" option. the ilugger seems like a great idea except that i'm a bit thrown off by how much it costs - $99.00 at least (seeing that i will really be using it only once). i'm trying to look if there are other similar "imac bags" but so far no luck.
The iMac is 24lbs+ and then there is your luggage too on an international trip?
Better you than me,baby. I would be too lazy to lug all that around.
No wonder they call them Lugger bags.
A little Macbook sounds good to me.
Good Luck.

reading this thread and with feedback from friends, i am also considering a macbook instead of an iMAC. the macs are cheaper to buy here in the US versus where i'm from (by around $200-$300) so you can see why i would want to buy it here. thanks.
