Non-random random

My i-Pod Touch, is set to random replay, but it only replays the songs alphabetically rather than randomly, and then from only several albums at a time, rather than the complete list of albums. This is in genres.

If songs are being played in alphabetical order, it seems unlikely that the player is in Shuffle mode (the mode you refer to as random replay). Perhaps you have the Repeat mode on instead.

On the Now Playing screen, drag the screen upwards so that the additional controls are visible. You should see the additional controls shown in my screenshot below - that is: the Shuffle and the Repeat buttons, below the volume bar:

My iPod is set to English, so the buttons are named Shuffle and Repeat.

If your iPod is using a different language, you should still find the Shuffle button on the left (as in my screenshot). Note that it has the two arrows crossing each other:

The Repeat button should be on the right and has the two arrows pointing to the other arrow's back end:

In my Now Playing screenshot above, the Shuffle mode is on so the button is red. The Repeat mode is off, so the button is grey. Note that the Repeat button can also similar to the one shown below:

Notice the little 1 in the arrows of the repeat icon. The button is red, so repeat is on, but the 1 in the arrows means that the iPod is set to repeat the song that is playing (so, just one song), until you stop it from playing.

  • The Shuffle button toggles between off and on
  • The Repeat button toggles between:
    • off (all songs play and then the iPod stops)
    • on (once every song in the list has played, play them again. In other words, repeat all songs)
    • on 1 (which plays just that one song over and over again).
