Zip files using Mojave

I am unable to compress files since upgrading to Mojave. When I make a zip file, it ends up being the same size as the original. Any help appreciated.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Compressed Files on Mac are larger than the original! I am trying to compress some files on my MacBook Air (2017), and when I "compress" the files, they are ending up larger! For example, the original file was 19.6MB and the zip file is 20.1MB. I'm confused and unsure why this is happening, but I need the files to be zipped to post them onto my Etsy page; the limit is 20MB files!

zip contents unpacking in wrong folder Hi, I have downloaded content (in download folder) that I move to its' appropriate folder... Once in the folder now containing the content I double-click to uncompress the .zip folder and it is unpacking it in the downloads folder instead of the folder where the .zip files - this is something new, it never did this before and it's not consistent... any advice? My Mojave install is the most current and up-to-date 10.14.5. Thank you. Stephanie

Cannot unpack zip-file. I have a normal zip-file (close to 1 GB). I hided it with HIDE FOLDER; sometimes I unhided it ("Show"), than "HIDE" again. It worked normally before the hiding and unhiding. Now, when shown I click on it or double click and it says "Cannot unpack; format is not supported." The name is just "archive Oh.zip". All this on a MacBook Air early 2014, Catalina 10.15.1 I have no backup of this file.

For instance, a JPEG is a compressed format. So, trying to compress it any more won't do much.

Whether a file ends up smaller depends on what format the file is.

Thank you both. The files were .jpg, so I suppose that is why they didn't compress any more. I appreciate the help.
