Iphones sharing Apple ID - No text notifications after software update

My wife and I each have an Iphone (6s & 6s+). We share the same Apple ID as a matter of convenience for use with contacts, email, etc. We have had no issues with this situation until we updated our software to IOS 12.0.1. After updating our software we do not receive a text notification sound when texting between these two phones. The text goes through but no notification sound or vibration which makes texting almost useless between these two phones. This situation only occurs between these two phones as we do receive text notification sounds when others text us to either of these phones. We do not have our settings on "do not disturb" or switched to "vibrate". We can call between these two phones and receive telephone notifications with no issues.

Any suggestions as to how to resolve this issue with a setting or some sort of work around would be greatly appreciated.

Hello gvvarg91,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with your Apple ID issue. I would like to address both the notification, and discuss a bit about Apple ID's.

For the notification not sounding, since you upgraded to iOS 12, there are new ways Notifications can be delivered, including "Deliver Quietly". This article talks about this, and how to check these settings: Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Please check that and see if that helps resolve your issue. Just for your own info, Apple ID's are not to be meant to be shared. This article talks about this: Use your own Apple ID for Family Sharing - Apple Support

Avoid sharing an Apple ID

If you share the same Apple ID with a family member for iTunes & App Store purchases, certain services will treat you as the same person. You may see these and other issues:

  • Apple Music family subscription: Instead of receiving your own membership with your own library, you’ll share a library and recommendations with the other family member.
  • iTunes, Apple Books, and App Store purchases: If Family Sharing is ever stopped, the owner of the shared Apple ID will keep all purchases. You might lose access to everything in the account, including purchases you initiated.
  • Apple Podcasts, Apple Books, and iTunes U: Podcast episodes, bookmarks, and iTunes U courses might sync according to the other family member’s preferences or be accidentally deleted.

To see which Apple ID your family member is using to share, tap Settings > [your name] > Family Sharing, then tap their name. If you're using iOS 10.2 or earlier, tap Settings > iCloud > Family. Make sure that no one else is using your Apple ID to share content.

Once each member of the family has their own Apple ID and signs in with it on their own devices, you can still share items using Family Sharing, even your locations with each other. If you don't have iCloud data mixing between the devices or other issues, you are welcome to continue as you wish, it's just not recommended.

Thanks and have a wonderful day.

Notification sounds still don’t work when sending text messages after checking settings on both devices. My next question is how do I change the Apple ID on my wife’s iPhone that currently has my Apple ID. I know she first has to get her own Apple ID and then somehow enter it in her iPhone. And then I would add her to Family Sharing” as a family member. But, when this happens (I.e., she changes the Apple ID on her device) will all the data (e.g., apps, contacts, notes, etc) be deleted from her iPhone? Can you direct me to something that will explain how this is accomplished?

Thanks you very much for your reply.
