Unable to Verify App - Ipad useless without an Internet connection

In Africa for a two week trip with no internet. One week into the trip ALL OF MY APPS failed to open, with this "Unable to Verify App" error. This was in error - all of my apps had been used several times in the week leading up to this error - 'first launch' was bogus.

The error was cleared when I got wifi and had to connect to the app store.
