HDMI connection to Samsung TV flickers

I have a MacBook early 2015 with 10.13.6 and every time I connect my Samsung TV via HDMI (using the apple required dongle), I need to rest the SMC otherwise the TV picture constantly flickers on-off-on-off.

I also have to be really particular about the way the SMC is reset (as it does not always work), that is I keep the TV HDMI connected then shutdown, then hold shift-control-option-power multiple times for 2 secs or more, then boot the MacBook with the HDMI still connected. It usually works but sometimes takes multiple attempts which is so annoying.

I also read posts where some people cannot get the flickering to stop at all so I suppose I am lucky, but I usually expect apple equipment to just work especially for graphics and screen issues. Does anyone know if this is fixed with Mojave? Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), null
