How do I unsilence my iPhone SE

I have an iPhone SE version 12.0.1. I am missing calls and texts because my phone goes on silence mode while the iPhone is locked. In the Do Not Disturb setting, which is turned off, it has a category "Silence" and there are two options. "Always" and "While iPhone is locked". How do I choose neither? I want to hear incoming calls and notifications all the time. It's locked most of the time.

Check the Mute switch on the side of the phone above the volume controls.

To answer your question, if the problem is not the switch you need to turn off DND AND set Schedule to off or set a meaningful schedule.

Use the side control and flip the switch up to ringer.
