TextEdit docs converted to Word

I am on a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.11.6.

I was working in Dreamweaver (CS6) this afternoon as well as in my employer's website, which is on the Wordpress platform, when I noticed that ALL of my TextEdit documents had converted to Word (although the file extension remained .rtf).

I quit out of all applications and did a Restart but it didn't help. I quit out of all applications and did a total shutdown, then booted up again. Same thing.

I have no idea how this happened and didn't even think it was possible.

This is a major crisis as it is verboten to copy and paste from Microsoft Word into any of the applications or online platforms that I work with.
