Best OS for older Macbook Pro?

Macbook Pro Model 5.3, possibly 2012, what is the best OS for it? I don't know which is best.

MacBook pro 5,3 is a 15-in screen 2009 model.

it can run anything from its original 10.5.7 to 10.11 El Capitan. For El Capitan and later, you should have 6GB or more of real RAM (max is 8GB for that model) to avoid it feeling "slow".

El Capitan and later provide the best defenses against malware.
