Pipe

Dear Mac Gurus:

Need your help on command pipe:

I want to create a disk image of a folder and copy the image to a File Server. After verification, delete the image.

FolderName: WorkFiles
ServerVolume://Volumes/BackUp/

Help, please!

Many thanks!

Dear Cole:

The reason why I asked about how to create disk images in locally. Then, Command Pipe the Images to the Server Share Volumes. After the verification of successful file transfer, Images will be deleted automatically, without further human intervention, from local hard drives, so as to conserve space.

It was because: The limitation of File Name Length to 31 or less on the "Service for Macintosh" of Windows 2003 Server. I could use "SMB" or "mount_ntfs" to circumvent the limitation. Yet! These two protocols do not preserve the antiquated OS9-era File's Resource Forks.

What you suggest is perfect for TigerOS Servers and Clients.

Is there some kind of script which can help me achieve the goal?

Thanks!

Hi Max,

Sorry for the delayed reply. These disk images can contain an HFS+ file system, but the disk image itself is a flat file. So any file with resource forks on these images will be protected during SMB file transfers.

In my examples I was suggesting that the image be created on the remote share thereby eliminating the need for a local copy of the disk image to be copied later. If the share is mounted, you can treat as a local volume: /Volumes/BackUpServer/your_image.dmg
