Unwanted reroute on apple maps

my last 2 long journeys using maps on my iPhone have been so nearly routined. I selected my preferred route and pressed GO. Some way into the journey I realised the app was taking a route to get me back to its own preferred route! By the time I realised I just had to go with the flow. How do I stop this happening. can‘t rely on the app as it is.

Thanks for your interest.

It changed to a faster route (10 mins faster). But actually the first time it did it, it took me on a massive cross country trip to eventually hook up with a motorway. Absolutely no time saving, just a lot of winding roads. I don't leave the phone in a place where I can see any on screen messages. I listen to the spoken instructions and also get the haptic instructions on my watch which are kind of neat. There is no audible message to say the route is being changed. There should be a setting called - 'No re-routing'
