iCloud access - space is precious!

When I turn on iCloud access on my laptop, it stores large volumes of data on my hard drive in mobile documents folder. I do not want this. I just want to be able to access my iCloud drive without anything being stored on my local drive. Space is precious!

Can someone advise what the settings should be to permit this.

iCloud is a syncing system, not an external 'hard drive'. To increase space available, go Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and select Optimize iPhone/iPad Storage. That will reduce the space required by about 90% when fully effective.

For what you want to do, you need a different cloud based solution such as Dropbox, OneDrive, or Flicker.
