Can I start my own account while still keeping my shared account
Is it possible to have a sharing account and a second non sharing account?

Managing purchases across multiple IDs is a headache you really don't need. See View and remove your associated devices in iTunes - Apple Support for just one of the potential problems. Updating apps from more that one account requires signing in and out of each account in turn.
