Read receipts not working

So I had my read receipts on with a specific person and they were working just fine then out of nowhere they stopped getting the notification that I read their messages even though it was still turned on. I have reset my phone, restarted it, toggled it on and off but nothing seems to be working. It works for everyone else except that person, how do I fix it?

So what finally worked for me is turning off read receipts, Sign out of iMessage (actually signing out your Apple ID), resetting the network settings, reboot, turn on iMessage (sign in again) and turn on read receipts.

IMO this shouldn't be marked as the solution. I believe OP (and at the very least myself) have read receipts on correctly.

Only the OP could have marked the post as "Solved", so perhaps they were satisfied with the answer.

If it's only one person who isn't seeing them, the problem may be on his end. I suggest you start doing some troubleshooting from that end as well.

We've both been doing the same troubleshooting steps with no luck. And for both of us read receipts do work on our iPads and Macbook Pro's, it's just our iPhones that have the issue.

I think there are people coming here (and potentially OP) who just had read receipts incorrectly set but there are others who are clearly having an issue that started around the time of 12.0.1 and is only effecting specific contacts. Should we start another thread that clarifies that? I'm not sure the exact protocol. I've spent about 6 hours trying to debug this, trying every possible setting on both ends and even introspecting the chat database, and nothing has worked. I imagine clearing the chat would work but this is the thread with my SO and we would both really not want to loose all our message history.

I would, especially as this thread has already been marked as solved. I'd also suggest you contact Apple Support. They may or may not be able to resolve the issue but they will log the problem. If you have an Apple developer account, you can also use Bug Reporter. Apple engineers aren't reading here for bug reports.

So, I must say, I love encountering problems like this, and I fixed it. I don't have read receipts on, but I have it for my girlfriend. The individual read receipts problem started happening when I noticed she went into a bad area with service. So, I wasn't getting her read receipts anymore on my iPhone XS Max, but I was receiving it on my MacBook via the iMessage. Her read receipts for me was turned on, and mine was turned on for her, she would see mine, and I wouldn't see hers, it would just say delivered. It bothered me for 24 hours, and turns out, it was HER phone that was the issue. So, these are the steps I did to fix it. Keep in mind, I did this for BOTH of our phones, for the **** of it, when they were side by side.

Had both phones together:

1) Signed out of iTunes on both phones

2) Signed out of iMessage on both phones

3) Went to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings (Keep in mind this will only reset network settings and Wifi passwords)

4) Force restart the phone. On iPhone XS Max and X - Quickly Press the Volume Up button > Volume down button > Then Press and hold the Power button until you see the Apple Logo.

5) Once both phones came back on, I signed back into iTunes, turned iMessage on, and it worked. I didn't have to reset the phones, although I backed up both phones, because I was about to, thank goodness I didn't have to, that would've been another few hours out of my life. But it could've just been an issue that the network settings were bad, but I did all of this for the **** of it.

Everything works fine now. After long hours, feels good to figure it out.
