DEAD IPOD 2nd Generation Shuffle

First off I have the latest IPOD/Apple software since I currently have a first generation IPOD Shuffle. Works fine with no issues. Purchased a 2nd generation yesterday......followed the limited instructions. Nothing. Computer doesn't recongize it doesn't charge....zero lights...nada. Figured it was a dud.....returned and exchanged for another 2nd generation Shuffle..........same story. NADA. Went thru the 5 R as provided by the web site......did some more research and noticed that one suggestion was removing the power mgmt feature from the USB ports to see if that would help charge and get something on the shuffle.....again NADA. Can't imagine why the first generation is working fine and is recognized and the 2nd generation....sits like a lump of used chewing gum. Can't imagine I got 2 dud's in a row.....something's gotta give......so I figured might be a software issue......redownloaded IPPOD/Apple 7.02 software and had it do a repair/restore versus full out replacement. Again NADA.....first generation works....2nd is dead and lifeless. Any suggestions other than a 3 pound mallet to the 2nd generation?

I had this problem when I first got my 2nd gen silver 1GB unit. I kept on turning off my computer, and unplugging the Ipod and starting over and over and over. After the computer recognized the ipod, it never had a problem again. The BIG problem I had was a Sony Noise Canceling Headphones setup. It has a AAA battery inline, and it blew up the first two 2ND gen Ipods we had before we put 2 & 2 together. The headphones work fine with regular Ipods, Nano's and such. Just don't plug them into the Shuffle. I guess the Nano's are charged from a seperate plug, and the shuffles only have one plug for both. The AAA battery must overload, or backfeed power or just short out the unit. Good luck to all. It is worth getting the bugs worked out, because these things are awesome. Shufflemiester

i got my dad a 2nd gen shuffle for xmas, and it was originally connected (registered? recognized? attachted?) to his laptop. now he wants it connected to our desktop, and itunes will not recognize it. i tried disconnecting and reconnecting, reinstalling and rebooting until my brother starting yelling at me about trying to kill the computer from too much exercise. i also tried all the site suggestions such as the 5 r's, only most of them require the ipod to be recognized on the source list. which is our problem. any ideas?
thanks
