How to transfer data from my Lacie backup to my new Macbook Pro?

How did you do the backup to the Lacie hard drive? Did you use Time Machine or some other backup software or manually copy files to the hard drive?

DO NOT use Carbon Copy Cloner to restore your data AND USER on a T2 machine (iMacPro and MBPros 2018) otherwise you are going to miss the user's token (the first user you applied to the new machine) and can have problem in accessing Security Settings Utility.

FWIW, external hard drives do not need any software to run and the software included on external drives sometimes is not optimized for Mac OS. It is generally recommended to format a new external hard drive which will erase everything on it and then use either Time Machine or CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make a bootable clone copy. Both work well and TM is OS native.

Hi babowa. What I said is suggested by mr. Bombich and reported in another topic (search for “no administrator password found - Security Settings Utility). I’m one of those affected by the problem because I setted up a temporary user for enabling boot from external disks in Security Settings Utility (disabled by default) and then booted from a ccc backup and cloned to the internal disk. The only way now to get the utility working is resetting the mbpro to factory settings through an authorized center or Applestore.

Why do you need Apple to reset it? Have you tried to use recovery? That is what that is for. As for booting from an external disk - I have not encountered a problem booting from one in Mojave. I've also not seen this: Security Settings Utility (disabled by default). Where exactly is that?

You can’t see the utility in Mojave because it’s not a Mojave’s feature but was implemented in the past and the problem I described affects only machines with the T2 chip. The utility is available just in Recovery Boot mode.

I have a further suspect: while doing a factory reset you must FIRST recreate the user you first temporary created. My suspect is that the name of the user is not on some partitions as Mike says but into the chips. I have to do more experiments before having a final answer but unfortunately I have a problem during initialization in APFS and then it will take some time. And I also suspect that Apple is aware of this problem but for security reasons it can't tell.

How did you back up your data?

Could you provide some documentation please as I’ve not seen or heard of a problem with the latest CCC version.

Ahh, thank you for that info (I had read about that, but do not own one). I had missed the info about the T2 chip in your post. So, we do not know if the OP has one of those or not at this point.
