Have you attempted either a Safe Mode reboot or resetting the NVRAM.
Restart in Safe Mode. Hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup tone until it boots.
But chance do you have any antivirus, cleaning or ANY other third party maintenance apps installed??
NVRam - if that is done with ctrl-option-R-P, yes. Startup just keeps chiming away with no result. I've uplugged and plugged back in my Seagate drive that holds my backup. No change. I can't see anything on that drive as it doesn't show up as an available volume. I will try safe mode. Thx
No luck in safe mode. But a message flashes that I can't read in entirety like "your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait ..."
Anyway no change and no boot. I do have Malwarebytes installed but no other cleaners from third parties. Even if I did I wouldn't be able to disable them.
I've been shutting down and trying fresh starts rather than restarts from macOS Installer which has had no different result. I am able to get to Disk Utility and tried First Aid on MACINTOSH HD and my FreeAgentDrive where my backup resides. Just thinking what good is a backup when the whole system is dead?
Apple support will be calling me this afternoon to try to help me. If they fail I’ll come back here. I do very much appreciate your time and effort in this. If it’s successful I’ll post the solution. Thanks again.
Apple support led me to do a Restore from Time Machine backup . That went well but after the restore was complete I seem to have lost all my apps. I have Finder, Dashboard, Downloads, and Trash icons in the bar on the bottom of my (sorry, I don't know what to call the bar WHERE the app icons reside). In the place of the app icons are question marks. When I use Finder I can see the contents lists of some of my folders under favorites and the images within. The Applications folder is blank. When I select a file or image to open it I get a dialog "____can't be openen because the original item cant be found."
Anyway, Support is ca,ling me tomorrow morning to see how my restore went. I'll be working with them to resolve this. So just fyi.
What year is the iMac??????
My iMac is a late 2012 edition. I backed up using Time Machine just before downloading Mojave and can't start up using either start up disc.
rkaufman _ Any way I can shoot you a screen shot of the Installation Log that shows what errors are occurring? I can't decipher it.
Attach the screen shot by clicking the camera icon when you reply, that icon will be in the reply message about in the left center.
Looks like all my screen photos come out >2MB and get rejected. Message you or email with it?
Use the Preview app to reduce the photos sizes.
