Hi Jeremy - you have probably got your question answered by know - anyway. Active calories are the calories you have burned while being active - walking, running - or just standing really. The difference between your active calories and total, are the calories you burn by the basic functions keeping you alive - breathing - your heart beating etc.

I am not a doctor - but as I remember - women burn 1800 Kcal and men 2400 Kcal... varies of cours....

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, judgesmith!

I understand you want to know how the Activity app and your Apple Watch calculate active and total calories. I'd be happy to provide information that may answer this question for you.

This article provides great information on the subject: Get the most accurate measurements using your Apple Watch

Keep your personal information up to date

Your Apple Watch uses your personal information — such as your height, weight, gender, and age — to calculate how many calories you burn and more.

To update your personal information, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Tap the My Watch tab, then tap Health. Tap Edit, then tap the item that you want to change.
