POWER MAC G5 UPDATE

Hi there.

I have a Power Mac G5 (Power Mac 11.2) currently running on OS X 10.5 with the following specs

  • Processor: Power PC G5 (1.1)
  • Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz
  • Number of CPUs: 2
  • L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
  • Memory: 8 GB
  • Bus Speed: 1.15 GHz

Your input on which OS can I update my Mac to would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance!

According to 'mactracker.ca' database application and other archives, your G5 among

other PowerPC models cannot exceed the last Mac OS X that series can run. 10.5.8.

Other systems such as Linux/Mac may still have a version for PPC Mac hardware.

The model is considered a Late 2005 Power Mac G5 with specific builds to that series.

2-core per CPU. And final, w/ quad 'liquid-cooled' dual 2.5, problematic to keep running.

Memory and HDD can be upgraded, even an SSD (Legacy OWC for PATA/IDE) will work.

The SSD + HDD could be configured for better load-speed runtime, for some applications.

Memory Slots 8 - 240-pin PC2-4200 (533MHz) DDR2 ECC or NECC SDRAM (matched pairs)

Model Identifier PowerMac11,2

Model Number A1117

EMC 2023

Order Number M9590LL/A (2.0 GHz), M9591LL/A (2.3 GHz), M9592LL/A (dual 2.5 GHz)

IF yours is quad core (dual 2.5) hardware options from owc appear here:

Upgrades for Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5GHz 'Dual Core/Late 2005' (October, 2005)

There's no 'intel CPU upgrade' to the Power PC G5, & no support for later Mac OSX.
