Why does Apple make it impossible to find out how to make an appointment for the Genius Bar? This is a trillion $ company that is supposed to treat the customer like a king! It's bad enough that my iPad isn't working; this just makes it even more irritating

It's very simple. You must first initiate a repair, as the repair solution you would select 'Genius Bar appointment.' There you would select the Apple Store of your choice and the available time that best fits your schedule.
