Mojave: Messages preferences glitch "Save history"

I recently updated my MacBook Pro to Mojave, and now the Messages preferences won't let me check "Save history when conversations are closed." The option is there, but grayed-out and "uncheckable."

I was used to closing out message windows and having the history stored. Now it won't allow me the option.
