Installing Epson Print Driver

Am trying to install print driver for new Epson CX6000 all in one printer. All goes well until there are six items remaining to load and then it quits and the computer locks up and I have to reboot it. I am running OS 10.3.9 on a G4 with plenty of RAM and disk space. Thus far I have: repaired permissions, uninstalled and tried to reinstall both from install CD and from downloaded installation file, created a new admin user and tried to install under that account, and called Epson tech support who say it is an Apple problem and not an Epson problem. Before I pack this thing up and return it for an HP model, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Bill!

This is the procedure, I used for my Epson C86.
Just change any reference to the C86 that I may have missed, to the CX6000.

* Download the most current driver from Epson. Printer Driver v3.3bA

* Before moving the folder & files listed below, to a Temporary Epson Trash Folder, that you should create on the Desktop, open Printer Setup Utility, and delete the CX6000.

* Quit Printer Setup Utility

* Move the files (Posted in CAPITALIZED Italics), to the newly created Temporary Epson Trash Folder (If some of these files and folders are not present, don't worry about it.)

HD > Applications >
EPSON PRINTER UTILITY (Alias)

HD > Users > Your Home > Library > Preferences >
COM.EPSON.IJPRINTER.UTILITY.PLIST
COM.APPLE.PRINT.CUSTOMPRESETS.PLIST
COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTCENTER.PLIST
COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTERPROXY.INTERNAL_MODEM.PLIST
COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTINGPREFS.PLIST

HD > Library > Printers >
EPSON (Folder) Only move this folder if you have no other
Epson products

I also had a Epson OS X booklet.pdf, that I had saved in my Documents folder. You will get a new one. After the installation, I replaced it. You may not have saved your original one. It's no big deal, there's really not much in it, In fact I don't remember the last time I opened it!

* Quit ALL running Applications

* Repair Permissions using Disk Utility in the Utilities folder

* Dig out your Epson CX6000 Start Here instruction quick sheet, for reference
* Unplug the USB cable from the Mac & then from the CX6000
* Re-attach the USB cable to the C86 & then to the Mac
* Turn on your CX6000
* Double click on: epson11518.sea.hqx to unzip ( This file may have a different name)
* Double click on: epson11518.sea to expand ( This one as well)
* Follow the prompts & instructions
* When the Vise installer opens in a window, double click it to start the install
* When the installation is complete, turn off the printer & restart your Mac.
* Repair Permisions again
* Turn on the CX6000
* Open Printer Setup Utility
* You have no printers available will appear. Click Add
* Select Epson USB in the contextual menu
* Click on Stylus CX6000 to highlight
* Add Page Setup: select All, from the contextual menu
* Click Add
* Quit Printer Setup Utility

The images below, that are left on the Desktop, can be trashed, unless you prefer to keep the installer. ( The files below will have different names as well).

epson11518.sea.hqx
epson11518.sea
C86Series_1.8bAs.dmg

Good Luck!

Thanks for the suggestions but it didn't work. I removed all the files you suggested and did the repair permissions as suggested; however, when I ran the installer it again quit with 6 items remaining to install. The computer locked up and I had to reboot in order to clear the screen. This is what has happened every time I try to lead the epson software.

There is no error message, when it gets to six items remaining to install, it simply stops and the computer locks up and has to be rebooted. I have waited as long as 30 minutes to reboot. I repaired permissions and also ran disk repair. Even tried starting in safe mode and still couldn't complete the installation.

I solved the problem by returning the Epson and getting an HP which is working fine. This is the second Epson printer that I have had problems with...there certainly will not be a third one.

Identical problem here with the cx6000 trying to install on iMac running 10.3.9.
Install worked just fine on the MacBook running Tiger.

I agree, it's beyond frustrating. I just want the **** thing to work, it shouldn't be this difficult.

FWIW, I found the .plist for VISE (craptacular installer) and trashed it, repair, restart...no go, same problem.

I DID IT!!

Finally after two days.
Basically I have a 3 year old 17" flat panel mac that is starting to show it's age.

I repaired permissions a million times.
Downloaded "Print Setup Utility" shareware from version tracker. This will pretty much wipe every printer-related file from your computer. I deleted all Epson drivers and did all the repairs available. It's free for 6 days.

Still same problem, but I don't think it hurt to clean things up.

I booted into single user mode (hold down Apple-S on startup) and at the prompt type fsck -fy
It'll spew out some gibberish and let you know of any disk errors. It can't fix them but Disk Utility can!

And that is what finally worked.

Boot from your installer CD 1.
Run Disk Utility.
Repair Disk. (I had many errors)
Disk Utility reported that my volume had been repaired.
Reboot.
Repair permissions again for old time's sake.
Reboot.
Run the &^%& epson driver installer again.

It got to 6 items left and....stopped. I hung my head in defeat. When I lifted it a mere second later...WHAM... the installer finished and exclaimed it was successfully installed. Victory was mine!

Successfully added the printer and printed off my winning March Madness bracket!!

So it really isn't a Apple OR an Epson problem. Basically its a maintenance problem and older computers being more prone to disk errors and minor corruptions and thus wreaking havoc on seemingly unrelated actions.

Bill and Gabrielle, try the disk repair from the installer cd, I really think you have major errors on your hard drives. I really hope this works for you and you haven't gone through the hassle of returning your printers.

Good luck
