Can’t open individual photo in Photos

I’m very familiar with photos. However ever since I downloaded the latest update I can’t open individual photos . I see the thumbnails but double clicking does nothing. I restarted the computer, I restarted iPhoto while holding down option & command and restored the library. Still no success. Any suggestions?

Photos not recognizing iPhoto Library When I upgraded to MacOS 12.3.1 Photos stopped recognizing iPhoto Library on my external drive. When start Photos while pressing the alt opt key and choose the iPhoto Library I get "The library could not be opened. The library "iPhoto Library" could not be recognized." When I created a new library on the external drive I noticed it said Photos Library.photoslibrary which is different than the old library. i

Photos says "These items cannot be added to your Photo library because the file format is not supported by Photos." When I try to access my photo library via Photos I get the message "These items cannot be added to your Photo library because the file format is not supported by Photos.". When I click OK I get a very small selection of photos displayed, presumably from an older photo library? The photo library is stored on an external hard drive. I also migrated an older library to it some years when I got my current MacBook Pro. I last viewed my photo library a few weeks ago, and it was all there, don't know what's changed. Running 10.14.4. Photos 4.0 Any help?

What has changed, before the problem first occurred?

Where is your Photos Library stored? Have you moved it to a different location? Are you using iCloud Photo Library?

Are all photos showing the same problem or only some of the photos? Is the file format different for the problematic photos?
