What is iPhone Preorder?

I’m new to all this stuff. I’m preordering the new iPhone XR. When I’m preordering do I pay with my credit card straight away? Do I get my phone delivered before the phone comes out? Or does my phone just get shipped on release day? What is the point of preorder?

Just to add to Si's response ... what will normally happen is that when you place the order, a hold will be placed on your card for the price of the phone (plus AppleCare if you get that, which I always do). Your card won't be charged, but if you check your balance it may show the lower amount. The hold will be lifted after a couple of days.

Your phone will be shipped — and your card will be charged — in time to arrive on October 26, the same day the new model goes on sale in retail stores — if you've placed the order before the initial pre-order batch has sold out. (There will still be new phones available at retail locations, on a first-come-first-served basis, until that supply runs out.

A fun thing to do is to use the tracking information from Apple to follow your phone as it moves across the world to arrive at your door on release day.

Preordering gets you in line before those who don't, that's all.

A couple of tips:

Make sure that your payment method associated with your Apple ID is valid, and is the one you want to pay for the iPhone with.

If you have an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch):

  1. Get the Apple Store app (the one literally called "Apple Store"). Open the app and tap the "Shop" tab at the bottom and navigate to iPhone, then the iPhone XR. At the top you'll see "Save time at iPhone XR pre-order. Get ready now. Start" Follow the prompts to select what you're interested in. There's no guarantee that what you want will be available come pre-ordering time, but doing this gets things ready for you.
  2. When pre-order time arrives, open the Apple Store app and follow the prompts to select your device ... you may change your mind from what you selected in step #2. Complete your transaction and then hope for the best.

This process has helped me numerous times, such that I've received my devices ASAP, in my case on release day (but no guarantee that'll be the case for you).

Basically it means you can order a product prior to it’s release date, they take your card details but usually only take the cash prior to shipping.

It’s generally a way to guarantee an early delivery, because if you wait for the actual release date there may be a backlog of orders and if so you might have to wait several weeks for production to catch up.
