Setting up IP printer (HP LaserJet 4000)

I've had this printer for years, It was set up through a PowerMac G4, and all the other printers on the network shared it via the G4. Now we got rid of the G4, but we can't seem to set up the printer... I double checked, OS X has he driers for it, but can't find it.
In the printer setup utility, I go to IP Printer, set protocol to HP Jet Direct - Socket, and enter the printers host name (which i got from the printer's info printout) It says "invalid host name or address" as for IP, the printout says the IP is 0.0.0.0, so i guess the IP is not set. how would i set it? does this mean the printer doesn't see the network (it's connected directly to a macbook right now) or is it perhaps a hardware issue? (tried usin a different cable)
any suggestions?

I think you've lost me...
Please tell me what's connected where. Do you have a router? Wireless router? So the 4000 has a Jetdirect card in it (gives you an ethernet connector)?
......
If you mean you've got a wireless network and then you've connected by ethernet directly to the printer, did you set up ethernet on the Macbook with a manual IP address? Try 192.168.5.5. Then, Turn on appletalk for built-in ethernet. Now when you click ADD in Printer Setup, also click the "Default Browser" button at the top of the dialog window. Your printer should show up with appletalk next to the name.

Hi,
OK now i tried connecting the computer to the router so all computers on the network can use it. I access the network via AirPort express which is connected to the router. I changed apple talk form ethernet to airport, but it still can't find the printer. ANy suggestions?
